BACKGROUND
Indonesia has captivated students from across the sea to expand their insights for its diverse languages, cultures, and tourisms. This opportunity encourages the government to constantly promote Indonesia throughout education. Hence, Indonesia begins to be the referral college to continue study in higher education to hold bachelor’s, master’s, and doctorate degrees. Furthermore, universities and schools in Indonesia strive to hold international programs, events and activities to incite international participants to join in.
Universitas Negeri Malang (UM), as one of the pioneers of ex-teacher training college, gradually improves its quality both in academic and non-academic. By adding elements of language and cultures in every line of education, UM endeavours to achieve its goal to be one of the leading universities and a reputable college, nationally and internationally. The growing number of its international students each year and its local students winning many international competitions and awards, UM proves itself to contribute to global education continuously.
However, current emergency global conditions caused by COVID-19 pandemic are unpredictable. It imposes on Indonesia and almost all countries in the world to limit our moves and activities, even ban domestic and international travels. This situation forces us to do most things online to obey the physical distancing obligations for everyone’s health and safety.
In provision for spreading its wings worldwide, virtual and/or physical, UM through the Office of International Affairs (OIA) offers various degree and non-degree programs. Successfully held some international non-degree programs such as UM iCamp, OALS (presently REALS), and other international flagship programs, UM this year is to launch a new international program, namely Universitas Negeri Malang International Festival (UM iFest), to introduce and elevate knowledge about Indonesian languages, cultures, and tourisms through international virtual workshop and creativity festival, as a substitute for the annual UM iCamp event.
OVERVIEW
In order to enhance global education at international level in a virtual and/or practical approach in the contribution of widely promoting Indonesian cultures and tourisms, especially Malang, UM through the Office of International Affairs offers UM iFest program. UM iFest is an online competition and workshop program for overseas students. The program is instituted to provide an online competition and workshops to expose Indonesian languages, cultures, and tourisms, particularly Malang.
UM iFest consists of online workshops and competitions. Some topics of online workshops are projected to be the program courses. Moreover, there are several online competitions to be hosted: vlog about Indonesian language and cultures (dancing, singing original/ cover, poetry, etc.), short-story writing (all the masterpieces will be compiled in a UM iFest book), Instagram TV, and Indonesian song video clip.
Designed to globally unmask the wonderful of Indonesian language, cultures, and tourisms, especially Malang, UM iFest presents the tagline “Broaden Your Vistas, Embrace Cultural Diversity” to excite overseas students to bear witness to Indonesia, the homeland of diverse languages, cultures, and tourisms.
OBJECTIVES
- To introduce Indonesian cultures, especially Malang, to international;
- To give excellent and memorable services that could inspire the overseas students as a candidate agent to promote Indonesia;
- To broaden the international exposure activities in Universitas Negeri Malang;
- To advance the reciprocity of international partnership initiation
- To endorse the potential tourism of Malang City
- To promote the education quality of Indonesia, especially Universitas Negeri Malang, to students from across the globe.
