Description:

Registration Number: KOM 371E Chassis Number: 36-6985 Launched at the 1962 London Motor Show, at the Elan’s heart was a rigid backbone chassis so good that it has formed the basis of all Lotus models since. Independent suspension under a light and outstandingly pretty GRP body ensured nimble handling with racing car feel and responses, while soft springing also provided an excellent ride – a combination allowing the Elan numerous track successes in little modified form; brakes were disc all round with centre-lock wheels. The engine, initially 1,498cc but soon increased to 1,558cc, was a four cylinder twin-cam unit; breathing through either twin Weber 40DCOE or twin Dellorto carburettors, it produced 105bhp at 5,500rpm and, via a close ratio gearbox, powered the diminutive Elan to 112mph and 0-60mph in 9 seconds. For November 1964 the S2 Elan appeared with larger front brake callipers, revised rear lights and full width wood fascia, while the fixed-head S3 followed in October ‘65 and the 115bhp S4 in March 1969. The example on offer here was fully rebuilt in the early 1990s for competition purposes, with the installation of a roll bar along with a full engine rebuild, a replacement powder-coated chassis and a full respray in sprint colours. Described as being in good to excellent condition throughout, this Elan comes complete with a history file containing old MoT certificates and bills for various work carried out over the years, as well as current V5 and MoT certificate valid until April 2011. An excellent opportunity to acquire an entry-level competition car, this little Elan is sure to bring its new owner a lot of enjoyment.
