ERCST (European Roundtable on Climate Change and Sustainable Transition) in Brussels is seeking an intern (Junior Researcher) for 6-9 months starting immediately, possibly extendible beyond this period as a Researcher.

Responsibilities

  • Carry out research activities for ERCST’s main work streams such as the European Green Deal, the EU ETS, Border Carbon Adjustments, Just Transition;
  • Research and draft background materials on the above-mentioned topics, and other topics related to climate and energy policies;
  • Communication activities, including website and social media management;
  • Maintain liaison with stakeholders such as policymaker, business associations,environmental NGOs, etc in his/her area of work;
  • Provide support to the director of the European Roundtable on Climate Change and Sustainable Transition.

Skills and Requirements

  • (Educational) background includes preference for political economy, environmental economics, or similar – a good understanding of economics is important;
  • Interest in climate and energy policy and politics – existing knowledge of climate change policy and market approaches to climate change is desirable;
  • Understanding of economic instruments and market approaches;
  • Native speaker standard of English – proficiency in other languages will be considered an advantage;
  • Be well-organised and able to pay attention to detail;
  • Ability to work in a demanding environment, take initiative and solve problems while under pressure;
  • Ability to internalise substantial amounts of (new) materials and think laterally;
  • Authorisation to work in Belgium.

Start date: interviews start as applications are received. Work will start as soon as possible after a suitable candidate is found.
Duration: Six to nine months, extendible as a Researcher for the right candidate. Compensation: Competitive, depending on the level, experience and background of the candidate.

  • Be part of the management team of ERCST;
  • Manage (research) projects for ERCST’s main areas of work within the European Green Deal;
  • Monitor and analyze relevant policy developments;
  • Provide support to the director of the European Roundtable on Climate Change and Sustainable Transition;
  • Maintain liaison with stakeholders such as business associations, environmental NGOs, etc.

Requirements

  • 8-12 years relevant professional experience, working on climate change policy, including market approaches to climate change (e.g. the EU ETS);
  • A good understanding of the EU policymaking process;
  • Understanding of economic instruments
  • Native-level written and spoken English – proficiency in other languages will be considered an advantage;
  • Be authorized to work and live in Belgium.

Desired 

  • A degree in (environmental) economics, or related discipline;
  • Experience working on energy policy;
  • Experience in an international environment and multi-stakeholder process;
  • Be well-organized and able to pay attention to detail;
  • Ability to work in a demanding environment, take initiative and solve problems

  • At least 3 years, and potentially more, relevant professional experience;
  • Expertise on EU climate change policy;
  • A good understanding of the EU policymaking process;

  • Be authorized to work and live in Belgium.
