Org. Setting and Reporting

This position is located in the Executive Office of the Secretary-General, in the Rule of Law Unit.

The incumbent reports to the Chief of the Rule of Law Unit.

Responsibilities

Within delegated authority, the Political Affairs Officer will be responsible for the following duties:

Provides support to daily functions such as clearance of reports, inputs for the Secretary-General daily updates, advice on other files handled by the Unit, performs backup functions for other colleagues.

Supports the development of a more systematic arrangement regarding the Executive Office of the Secretary-General interventions on human rights issues. Acts as focal point for requests for the Secretary-General intervention and follow-up.

Acts as a focal point in the Executive Office of the Secretary-General for issues related to rule of law support such as corruption, drugs and crime, counter-terrorism, Sustainable Development Goal 16 (SDG 16) and on thematic human rights issues such as death penalty, protection of minorities, racial discrimination, freedoms of association, expression and religious belief, etc.

Conducts research and analysis on rule of law related topics and supports the drafting of the Report of the Secretary-General on Rule of Law.

Contributes to special projects of the Rule of Law Unit, as needed.

Performs other related duties, as required.

Education

Advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent degree) in political science, international relations, international economics, law, public administration or other related area. A first-level university degree in combination with qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.

Work Experience

A minimum of five (5) years of progressively responsible experience in the field of political affairs, international relations, law, human rights, development, conflict resolution or related area.

Experience working in a international organization and/or field experience is desirable.

Languages

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the position advertised, fluency in English is required and knowledge of another official United Nations language is an advantage.

Assessment

Evaluation of qualified candidates may include an assessment exercise which may be followed by competency-based interview.
